- Check Record Prices. Well, I just got lucky and found a copy of Joanna Newsom's new record at my local store. (one day before release, yay!) The album is gorgeous and also rather expensive but does not include a download code. After reading up on this issue, it seems that no album released on DC includes DLs and this irks me quite a bit. I can't understand the reasoning behind consciously not following an industry standard that makes life much easier for people who like to listen to their purchased music digitally.
One can't just rip a LP, as opposed to CDs. I once had a conversation with my local store owner about this.
I thought it was odd, but he was actually a big supporter of it. How it seems to be is that DC wants to sell high quality vinyl for the lowest price it can.
Part of reaching that price point is not including a DL code, since they usually cost a couple dollars per record. On top of that, judging by Drag City's lack of interaction with Spotify & other more digital formats, they seem to prefer tried and true sales. They do pretty well too so it must work okay. Is it frustrating as a digital child?
A little, especially if the album's not on Spotify. But really, I'll take the cheaper record with better sound any day.
I think a lot of their target market agrees too. I might get some downvotes for this but the quality of the only other DC record I own (Newsom's HOOM) is not particularly high.
It's a nicely packaged box but the vinyl itself sounds rather dull. Also, while that one was rather modestly priced, Divers costs about €30, which is not really a low price compared to other recently released records.
It does include some beautiful photos instead of a regular booklet though, this might explain the price. To me it's just a little frustrating since the album will inevitably be put up for download - but this is illegal in some parts of the world. Drag City also already has a download system for MP3 and FLAC files, so it would be a one-time cost for them to implement a code frontend for that (excluding server and bandwidth fees) • • • • •. There's fees to printing the codes too for ink, paper, cutting them, etc. Plus it takes manhours away from the pressing plant workers from actually pressing records backing up the already way backed up process.
The more stuff to include before shrinkwrapping the album, the more time lost. And it takes, what, 4-5 months to get a record pressed? They'll need to make the codes that far in advance, which is some amount of risk that maybe they don't want to play with in how rampart leaks have been this year. Plus it's hard to say how many people will actually redeem the codes too, which might be hard to justify the cost for them. There is good reason for including download codes, but there's a lot of not often thought about downsides as well, and I don't think it's a clear of a 'they have zero reason not to do this' thing as it seems. High quality vinyl for the lowest price it can Are we talking about the same label here?
I love Joanna and own all her records. While the packaging is nice, the pressing quality on my copies is all kinds of awful. Lots of surface noise out of the box on all of them, on one LP a pressing fault causing loud clicks on both sides, and on HOOM just terrible flat sounding music, noticable even through my cheap setup. Literally the worst sounding new record I've ever bought. At least those records were fairly cheap, but the new one is $26 for the standard 2xLP. I find I don't use the download codes much off the records I buy.
I have Spotify now so I don't use my Mp3s as much. If the album is also on Spotify, I typically don't end up using the code. It is a bit of a bummer with Drag City not including them and not being on streaming, as I listen to a fair amount of their artists, Bonnie Prince Billy being one of my favorites. I see purchasing new records as a way of supporting the artists I really love. I don't splurge on a lot of artists I am not familiar with when it comes to vinyl. I know with Drag City all their artists are smaller, independent artists.
BPB has talked about how 'this is his job' he sits down and writes music and releases albums cause it's how he makes his living. And while that can create arguments about the art of things, it is a reality for musicians. Drag City works to make the most it can for it's artists.
It's why it doesn't support streaming services cause it pays so little to the artists. It is a business model that allows DC's smaller musicians to hopefully survive and make a living. Certain labels and artists can afford to offer download codes for free with purchase, others cannot. Drag City has always been a small, fringe label. It has to charge for these things to stay in business. You are supporting super independent musicians through places like Drag City. You give them extra support when you buy both the vinyl and the digital download or you just get the vinyl and make the times you sit down to listen to them something special.
There's plenty to hold you over on Spotify when you're away from the needle. For more info on the inner workings of a small, fringe label watch, 'our vinyl weighs a ton' on Netflix. Depending on what turntable you have, you can most certainly rip a vinyl. Download Peta Surabaya Terbaru.
But, I do agree with you that I like getting a download with an album, especially if it's one I don't have a digital version of or can't find a slightly more. Montarily efficient version. Plus, I already paid for it, just give me more access to listening to it. I was quite sad that all of the Protest the Hero vinyl I have purchased not only have no download, but nothing at all. No insert, no lyrics. $25 and up for just a vinyl and a sleeve.
